Arch RockMACKINAC ISLAND
One of the most photographed natural wonders on Mackinac Island is the iconic Arch Rock. Towering more than 50 feet wide this natural limestone arch was hollowed out over thousands of years by water erosion from Lake Heron and wind, leaving behind the hard rock formation that is the Arch Rock. Located along the southwest shore of Mackinac Island you will need to hike, bike or take a carriage ride to the foot of the (207) stair trail that leads you to the top of the arch formation. The Arch Rock can also be viewed from below along a perimeter road. |
Native Americans believed the Arch Rock was a place of immense power that was also used as a bridge for spirits entering the afterlife to find their final resting place among the caves on the island.
Over the years, there have been many stories related to the Arch Rock. One legend is about a young woman who patiently sat on the top of the cliff watching the horizon, for her lover to return home. To prove his worthiness of marriage he had left to joined his tribe men in battle. One day she could see the war canoes of her tribe returning in the distance. Filled with excitement and joy she thought he had finally returned to her. But as the canoes rowed closer to shore she heard a song of sorrow for the departed. Frantically searching for the man she would soon marry, she could not see him onboard. Heartbroken she realized the song was intended for her and she leaped from the cliff into the sea to join him in death. Centuries later, the Arch Rock is also known as “Lovers Leap” in remembrance of this young woman's tragic story.
