Milwaukee WI Cruises

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin.  Best known for its Major League Brewers and abundance of famous breweries, Milwaukee is rich in history.  Milwaukeeans treasure their roots, which are found in the revitalized architecture of downtown and the celebration of many summer festivals depicting the city's many cultures.  When visiting with a Great Lakes cruise, be sure to check  out the Milwaukee Art Museum or the Harley Davidson Museum. NORTH POINT LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM
The North Point Lighthouse Museum offers exhibits, artwork and a collection of artifacts all pertaining to this famous lighthouse and its keepers. The North Point Lighthouse is open weekends for people to visit.

PABST MANSION 
The Pabst Mansion located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is a grand Renaissance Revival-styled house that was built in 1892, 
for the founder of the Pabst Brewing Company, Captain Frederick Pabst (1836-1904).  Today this magnificent house museum offers tours to the public and was placed on the National Registry of Historic places in 1975.

MILWAUKEE COUNTY ZOO

THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON MUSEUM
Milwaukee, Wisconsin is celebrating over 100 years of  history with Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It started with a teenager named William S. Halley working in the town's bicycle shop. As an apprentice, years later he drew up plans for an engine that could be adhered to a standard metal bicycle frame.  Later he teamed up with his longtime friend Arthur Davidson, creating the company we all know today, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. In 1910 The Harley-Davidson Motor Company went from a small Milwaukee startup to a global success story by 1920.  When you visit Milwaukee, you have the opportunity to visit the only Harley-Davidson museum in the world that attracts approximately 300,000 visitors annually. The highly visible 130,000-square-foot complex consists of three buildings on 20 acres along the Menomonee River bank.  The motorcycle company ceased operations on this site back in 1973, however the Juneau Avenue facility serves today as the company’s corporate headquarters and is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Within the museum you will see hundreds of thousands of artifacts and more than 450 Harley-Davidson motorcycles and from the Harley-Davidson Motor Company's 110-year history.

MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM
The Milwaukee Art Museum was the first of its kind and has been collecting art since 1888. The 341,000-square-foot Museum includes over forty galleries located on four floors, art is regularly rotated from present day works to antiques .  Representing over 25,000 works of art, the museum has over 400,000 visitors yearly.

MILWAUKEE BREWING COMPANY
Guests can visit the MKE 9th Street Taproom and grab a seat at the bar or check out the views from the second-floor mezzanine overlooking their our state-of-the-art brewing equipment.  The facility features over 30 draft lines, and is constantly rotating their award-winning beers.  Find out more at the following link: Milwaukee Brewing Company

MILWAUKEE PUBLIC MUSEUM
Located in downtown Milwaukee you will find the Milwaukee Public Museum established in 1882 this museum of natural and human history has over four million specimens on display. Permanent exhibits are displayed on three and half floors of the museums leaving additional space for traveling and temporary exhibits.  One exhibit takes you back in time to the historic streets of Milwaukee, a European village and Mediterranean civilizations.  Mostly known for the Third Plant Exhibit visitors can take a look first hand at the world's largest known dinosaur skull and a life size replica of a life Tyrannosaurus rex.  Also consider an adventure amongst live free flying butterflies collected from around the word at the Puelicher Butterfly Wing Exhibit. When you arrive at the museum you cannot help but notice the Burke Brise Soleil that sits directly on top of the building resembling a soaring gull with the grand wingspan of a jet.  This movable fixture shades the glass-domed Windhover Hall below.  When the wind reaches 23 mph or above this magnificent work of art closes its wings with automatic sensors.

  • Early records show that the city of Milwaukee was originally spelt as "Milwaukie."
  • Pabst was the first Milwaukee Brewery to open in 1844.
  • The Milwaukee Public Museum is home to the world’s largest dinosaur head.
  • Fans of the 1970 to 1980 era sitcoms will recognize a bronze statue of Arthur Fonzarelli (The Fonz from Happy Days) giving a thumbs up along the Milwaukee RiverWalk.   The statue stands 5’6” tall, the actual height of the actor Henry Winkler, who represents Milwaukee’s most famous imaginary son.
  • Shortly after moving to Milwaukee to write for a newspaper, Christopher Latham Sholes invented a  "typewriting machine," now known as the typewriter.
  • Two Wisconsin business men, Joseph Zimmerman and George Danner invented the first successful answering machine.
  • In the early 1930s, the popular yellow cap lip balm we know as Carmex was originally sold out of the trunk of a car.  Invented by Alfred Woelbing on his kitchen stove for cold sore relief, this well known product is still manufactured in Milwaukee.
  • Since 1916, the Polar Plunge has been a New Year's Day tradition.  To get in the spirit, Milwaukeeans get dressed up in crazy outfits only to strip down and jump into Lake Michigan.
  • Milwaukee's got its nickname "the Cream City" from the light colored bricks found throughout town.  Because the clay collected from the Menomonee River Valley and Milwaukee area contains high levels of lime and sulfur, during the firing process the red bricks turn into a light  cream color.
  • Milwaukee's Downtown RiverWalk has the only U.S. skywalk in existence that allows pedestrians to walk over boat traffic.
  • Milwaukee’s Summerfest is the world’s largest music festival.  The festival takes place over 11 days and features over 1,000 performances that are attended by over 900,000 spectators, giving the city the name “City of Festivals”.
  • The ice rink "Slice of Ice" located in downtown Red Arrow Park is bigger than New York’s Time Square.
  • The Rocky Horror picture show has been played every month since 1978 at Milwaukee’s East Side.
  • Miller Park Miller Park has a retractable roof.
  • Milwaukee’s Holler House is the oldest bowling alley in the U.S.
