In 1892, the Milwaukee County Zoo opened for business as a miniature mammal and bird display in Washington Park. It turned out to be a very popular attraction, and by the turn of the century it had blossomed into a zoo with over 800 animals on 23 acres of land. For the next 100 years, the zoo continually expanded and finally ended up moving to a new 190 acre wooded site. The Milwaukee County Zoo is now home to more than 2,100 animals and 348 species. |
Their objective is to pass along an appreciation for all animals, as well as the conservation of their differing habitats. The vision of the zoo is to be a leader in animal management, conservation, research and education. They strive to keep a wholesome environment while reaping the admiration of citizens and other zoos all across the globe. The Milwaukee County Zoo’s mission is to inspire a better understanding by the citizens through support and participation in the conservation of animal species and their environments. They seek to improve the quality of their professional development, administration and operating environment. To share their knowledge so they may reinforce the human animal earth bond. They strive for the organization to be self sufficient financially. They want to foster physical, psychological and social development for all the animals in their care. And finally, contribute to a world wide animal management and conservation effort.

The Aquatic and Reptile Center, Herb and Nada Mahler Family Aviary, Taylor Family Humboldt Penguin Exhibit, North America Exhibit, Northwestern Mutual Family Farm, Florence Mila Borchert Big Cat Country, Africa/Asia South America Exhibits, Sterns Family Apes of Africa, Primates of the World, Small Mammals, Winter Quarters, and their newest fun event, the Wild Connections: Animal Encounter Tours. The Milwaukee County Zoo is a place where nature and wonder meet!
