The Ayer Mansion was built in 1899 in Boston, MA for businessman Frederick Ayer. The mansion is the only surviving residence created by the world renowned artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. In 2005, the Ayer Mansion was named a National Historic Landmark. Tiffany designed stone and glass mosaics, metalwork, custom furniture, intricate plaster work, glass vases, and art glass windows make us this beautiful masterpiece. |
The Ayer Mansion helped usher in the interior design profession and revolutionize the art of stained glass. As one of only three surviving Tiffany residential commissions, the Ayer Mansion is the only house that was designed from its inception by Tiffany.
While Tiffany is well known for designing interiors, the mansion is the only known example of a surviving Tiffany designed exterior that’s still in its original state.
The Ayer Mansion was a portrayal of progressive turn of the century exterior and interior. Not only did Tiffany found the profession of interior design, he also popularized new tastes for interior spaces like Orientalism. Orientalism is the art of Persia, India, Byzantium, Japan, and North Africa. This eastern art was dominant in his designs all throughout his career. The interior and exterior of the Ayer Mansion were quite progressive for Boston during the turn of the century. It was this progressive design that distinguished the Ayers family as more having a more worldly influence.
As reflected in the Ayer Mansion, the daring styles and experiments of Tiffany revolutionized the way the glass industry was translated in the Western World. Especially those found in Ayer Mansion, as they wearisome of his most advanced styles of decorative windows since the Middle Ages.
Undoubtedly, the Ayers were heavily involved in hiring Luis Comfort Tiffany to work on their mansion. After a nearly two year long extended vacation in Europe, the Ayers returned with many fine artifacts that would find their resting place in Ayer Mansion.
Since then, the mansion has had numerous owners and uses. The present owner is the Trimount Foundation and Bayridge Residence and Cultural Center.
