The Bruce Peninsula National Park is an area of156 square feet located on part of the Niagara Escarpment. It is one of the largest protected areas in the south of Ontario. It is the core of UNESCO’s Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve. This national park offers numerous outdoor activities like camping, hiking, and bird watching. In the park there are many types of wildlife including black bears, massasauga rattlesnakes, several species of birds just to name a few.
There is a rock escarpment that is approximately 400 million years old. Scientist say it probably looked very similar to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia in present times. It was once covered by a shallow sea with tropical life life coral, mollusks, and crustaceans. Once the sea dried up, the minerals dissipated becoming more concentrated. The sea water magnesium absorbed into the limestone which changed it to a harder rock called dolomite. The fauna in the area consist of inhabitants like chipmunks, squirrels, white-tailed deer, frogs, raccoons, red foxes and more.
There is also a very popular grotto in Tobermory that is visited by thousands of guests each year. With its turquoise water and beautiful cave structures, it is considered one of Mother Nature’s Crown Jewels. Nearby Bruce Trail is also accessible and highly recommended as well.
If you plan to hike the park to get to the grotto, plan on about 45 minutes to get there each way. The path is lined with beautiful ancient cedar trees and spiraling cliffs. The area has an abundance of orchids, ferns, birds, and more. Swimming is allowed in the grotto so be sure and take your swimsuit along. It is most crowded in July and August so plan to arrive as early as you can to get a parking space. You can access the grotto via the entrance to the park on Cyprus Lake Road.
