The Buffalo Botanical Gardens were established in 1900 because of a vision of a select group of men; David F. Day, Frederick Law Olmsted, John F. Cowell, Frederick A. Lord and William A. Burnham. With a background in Victorian glass houses, Lord & Burnham brought their visions to fruition with a unique design concept that was based on the Crystal Palace in England. More than 140,000 people visit the gardens each year. The Gardens is a national historic, educational and tourist destination packaged with all types of horticulture gems from around the world. |
With 12 buildings and gardens making up the property, you’ll find incredible architecture like the Palm Dome to the indoor and outdoor garden sanctuaries, so there is beauty everywhere.
- The #1 house is the Palm Dome which stands a mere 67’ tall and is full of magnificent palms and tropical fruit trees. Such varieties like the Old Man Palm, Foxtail Palm, Chocolate Tree, and Ponderosa Lemon are just a few of the trees you’ll find.
- The Aquatic Garden is house #2 that includes a peaceful pond and a family of koi as well as a beautiful flow form water feature surrounded by native South East Asia plants.
- House #3 is the Asian Rainforest which is a waterfall surrounded by various bamboo and other horticulture beauties also found in South East Asia.
- One of the favorites is House #4 the Cacti and Succulent house. It includes numerous varieties found in the American deserts like giant cacti and agave plants.
- House #5 is the the Ivy, Carnivorous Plants & Medicinal Garden.
- House #6 is the Begonia House chocked full of numerous vibrant colors of begonias.
- Number 7 is the Archangel Gallery is home to constant changing photography and art exhibits by professional an amateur artists.
- House #8 is the Orchids house full of common and unusual species of orchids that are on display in full bloom.
- House #9 is the Tropical Plant House which is full of amazing tropical plants, water features and a vine covered gazebo.
- House #10 is home to the event space for weddings, parties, meetings, etc.
- House #11 is the Panama Cloud Forest which is indicative of what a rainforest looks like some 200’ above the rainforest floor.
- Rounding out House #12 is the Florida Everglades. This immersive exhibit reflects the importance of maintaining wetlands and other natural filtration systems of the world.
