When cruising the Great Lakes, xxx is an amazing place to discover when cruising City, State,
Here is Casa Loma. Thanks
Once named the “Best Venue in North America”, Casa Loma estate and gardens was built in 1914 located in mid-town Toronto, Ontario. This enchanting castle welcomes more than 650,000 visitors, as well as host more than 250 private events annually.
The estate was built by Sir Henry Pellatt, an ambitious commerce Toronto businessman. He was a supplier of steam generated electricity and his father founded the Toronto Electric Light Company in 1883, which he later took over in 1892 when his father retired.
Sir Pallatt had an intuition that he should purchase stock in the North West Land Company and the Canadian Pacific Railroad. Although his close friends objected to this purchase, Sir Pallatt quickly found he was spot on and began reaping hefty profits from his investments. He seemed to have that Midas touch when it came to business dealings.
By 1901, Mr. Pallatt was chairman of twenty one companies in the insurance, land, electricity and mining industries. He was also awarded the rights in 1902 to build the first Canadian hydro-generating plant at Niagara Falls. By 1905, he was knighted for his military service. Sir Pellatt had a lifelong passion for the military and specifically the Queen’s Own Rifle collection.
He was a family man who cared deeply for them and he embraced the family motto “Devant Is Je Puis” (“Foremost If I Can”). He was an amateur champion in the one mile race. He had a love for traveling Europe to explore fine art and architecture. That was where he began his vision for building Casa Loma. By 1911, he used $17M of his fortune to have the plans drawn up for his dream home, the castle of Casa Loma a name that was given from the previous land owner and it translated in Spanish to “Hill House”. The home took $3.5M to build and three years. He filled it with priceless artwork from around the world and the end result was it surpassed any other home in North America. There were secret passageways and entertainment venues. He entertained on a large scale due to his military and business connections. With modern day conveniences combined with the beauty both on the interior and exterior of the home, it was the perfect setting for many extravagant social events. With the electricity market going public, the mass fortune of Sir Henry Pallatt could not sustain his spending. In order to finance expansion, he went further and further into debt which ultimately led to bankruptcy and the auctioning of his beautiful Casa Loma.
