Cathedral Church of St. JamesTORONTO, CANADA
When cruising the Great Lakes, the Cathedral Church of St. James is an amazing piece of history you should discover when cruising Toronto, Canada. Toronto, Ontario has numerous attractions to see, but one you definitely don’t want to miss is the beautiful Cathedral Church of St. James. For more than 100 years, the church has been a fantastic example of Gothic Revival architecture. From its iconic tower and spire, it is a permanent piece of architecture seen in Toronto's skyline. |
With the parish being established in 1797, it is the oldest congregation in the city. The Catedral was constructed in 1850 and services began in 1853. The church also has the Bells of Old York that were installed in 1997 to celebrate the Cathedral’s bicentennial. The bells chime weekly throughout the St. Lawrence neighborhood. The Bells of Old York have a unique set of 12 change-ringing bells making it the only such ring of 12 in all of North America.
The tower and spire rise to 305 feet above street level making it one of the tallest bell towers in the world.
The design and architecture that went in to St. James is nothing short of a stunning and purposefully planned and executed masterpiece. Even the stained glass windows, high ceilings, pointed arches, pinnacles, and flying buttresses were all intentionally placed so the amount of light pouring in would be maximized.
The cathedral is decked out with beautiful stained glass windows that tell stories from the Bible as well as stories about the history of the Christian Church. One in particular is the one on the west porch which was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II in 1997.
Built in 1888, the church’s organ is an English Romantic/AmericanClassic instrumental piece. Located on the rear wall of the cathedral, the organ’s pipes and chest are separated from the main pipework with a beautiful and colorful antiphonal division. This incredible instrument has 87 ranks, 67 speaking stops, and more than four manuals and six divisions with a total of 5,101 pipes.
