Gangsters and Ghosts ToursCHICAGO, ILLINOIS
While cruising to Chicago your stop would not be complete without taking a trip down memory lane with Gangsters and Ghosts Tours. This fantastic walking tour traces the steps of some of Chicago’s most notorious gangsters. The 1920’s to the 1930’s ushered in the time when prohibition on the sale of alcohol was in force, but the underground gangsters made it a very profitable business. They were major suppliers of alcohol and they operated from secret bars, saloons, hotels, and more. |
This 1.5 mile tour will guide you through the areas where some of the most memorable events occurred. Like a stop at the Chicago Congress Hotel where Al Capone ran his bootleg operation in secret. You may even spot his ghost stalking the halls. Tour guides will give you a narrated tour including juicy details of Scarface’s violence that he inflicted on competing gangsters.
Their crime sprees as well as many others shaped the reputation Chicago was best known for as well as its infamous fires. Most of the buildings you will find do not predate 1871. That is because the great Chicago fire that destroyed most of the city took place at that time.
In 1903 there was another fire that was not as wide spread, but it was horrid and it resulted in a more than 600 people losing their lives. They were guests in the Iroquois Theatre (now known as the Oriental Theater). They were packed inside enjoying the performers at a matinee show when one of the stage lights caught fire. Hundreds of people were trapped inside the building and unfortunately perished. It’s been said the alley behind the theater which has been dubbed “Death Alley” has an unusual high number of ghosts sightings and apparitions. The tour will round out with some references to the notorious serial killer Dr. H.H. Holmes who operated a pharmacy as a front for the location where he murdered an unknown amount of women. He was eventually caught and hung for his crimes. Learn more about the different cruises that visit Chicago.
