Great Lakes Shipwreck MuseumWHITEFISH POINT, PARADISE, MICHIGAN
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, located at Whitefish Point in Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula, attracts over 100,000 visitors each year and is approximately 1.5 hours from the navigational locks at Sault Ste. Marie, MI. A visit to this National Historic Site encompasses a tour through maritime history; focusing on area shipwrecks, the U.S. Lighthouse Service, the U.S. Life-Saving Service and the Whitefish Point U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Station. Visitors will also discover the rugged and sandy Lake Superior shoreline, boardwalks, nature trails and the diverse bird habitat found in the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory. |
The Shipwreck Museum main gallery itself features top quality exhibits of shipwreck artifacts, artwork, shipwreck models, and lifelike mannequins. Admission includes the Shipwreck Museum gallery, a 15-minute video, tour(s) of the restored 1861 lighthouse keeper’s quarters and the 1923 Lifeboat Station Surfboat House. The bell of the famous steamer Edmund Fitzgerald is on display and is not only the centerpiece of the gallery, but also serves as a memorial to her crew. Towering over the entire site is the Whitefish Point Lighthouse tower, which was built during President Abraham Lincoln’s administration and is still a fully operational USCG aid-to-navigation. Great Lakes’ freighters are a common sight steaming close to the shoreline, while panoramic views of Lake Superior, Whitefish Bay and the hills of Ontario, Canada loom in the distance. Finally, the Shipwreck Coast Museum Store features maritime themed gifts, apparel, books and delicious fudge!
