KINGSTON, NEW YORK The Hudson River Maritime Museum was founded in 1979 and by 1980 they had opened their first exhibit. The museum has a collection of artifacts exclusively dedicated to the research and preservation of the Hudson River and its tributaries. Artifacts include but are not limited to vessels, archival material, and art related to the industry and recreation. The collection includes such items as photographs, paintings, blueprints, ship models, life boats, shad boat, lighthouse tender and ice yachts. |
The Maritime Museum hosts several events such as Vets on Water. The Wooden Boat School host a wide array of classes like the Live Edge Table Build, Family Carolina Skiff Build, Build Your Own Adirondack Chair, Canoe Paddle Carving, and Workbench Build.
The maritime heritage includes industries like ice harvesting, boat building, blue stone quarrying, brick and cement making, crushed stone, and coal transportation.
The museum was originally located in a storefront at Spring Street and Broadway. The museum moved down to the former Miron Lumber Company offices on East Strand Street in 1983.
The Maritime Museum has 2 main in-house exhibits. The first is Henry Hudson’s Timeless River: An Artistic Journey Along Hudson’s Route from New York Harbor to Albany. Showcasing a collection of drawings and paintings inspired by the voyage of Henry Hudson in 1609. It depicts modern day locations of Hudson’s historic stops along the river and the timelessness and changes to the Hudson River over the last 400 years.
The second exhibit is the Mary Powell: Queen of the Hudson and built in 1861, the Mary Powell was operated by the Anderson family for most of her career. The Mary Powell also represented the best of Hudson River Travel, known for her elegance, speed and safety.
The last exhibit is a series of three online exhibits. Tugboats: Workhorses of the Hudson River. The Hudson River Day Line: 1863-1971. Rescuing the River: 50 Years of Environmental Activities on the Hudson.
The Kingston Home Port and the Education Center, also referred to as “The Barn”, served as a winter home port for Clearwater and summer program and event space. In 2015, the museum purchased the the former Rositas Restaurant property where it was turned into a Wooden Boat School. Then in August 2017, the Sailing & Rowing School started its first youth sailing program.
The Hudson River Maritime Museum offers youth and adult rowing and sailing classes, and US Sailing instructor certification classes. Classes are available for todays new generation of enthusiasts and to preserve the tradition of rowing on the river.
