The Perce Rock is a huge rocky cliff naturally formed from limestone and shalein the gulf waters of Saint Lawrence on the tip of the Gaspe Peninsula. At a distance, the rock looks like a ship under sail. The rock is steep on all sides and it measures 1,421 ft long, 300 ft wide, and 289 ft high at its highest point.
The rock is connected with the mainland at Rue du Mont-Joli by a sandbar and its visible only during low tide. It is possible to walk to Perce Rock but only during low tide.
There are approximately 150 different fossilized species of plants and animals. The rock was formed more than 400 million years ago during the Devonian period. It is a testament of the incredible tectonic forces that raised the rock and mainland from the seafloor where it was originally formed, to its current position way above sea level. Its hard to imagine a rock formation of that size doesn’t just topple over.
Perce Rock is also the tourist emblem of Quebec. It has an arch that ’s about 20 meters in diameter (about 65 1/2 feet). On this boat trip you will see all kinds of birds as this is a sanctuary for many of them.
The Julien Cloutier Cruise Boat Tours take place at various times during the day depending on the season. They do require you be there a half an hour in advance of your boat ride. There is a minimum of 20 passengers required to operate each tour and cost may vary depending upon current exchange rates. Check with the boat company as to the current price if you want to add on Bonaventure Island or whale watching.
