Kitch-iti-kipiMANISTIQUE, MICHIGAN
When cruising the Great Lakes, Kitch-iti-kipi is a historic and beautiful destination in the US state of Michigan. One of the most alluring attractions in Manistique, Michigan is the beautiful blue/green water of the Kitch-iti-kipi. In the Ojibwe language, it translates to “big cold spring”. It is also referred to as “Big Spring” or “Mirror of Heaven”. Why is it so important and what is so special about it? It’s the largest natural freshwater spring in Michigan. |
The spring measures 200 feet in diameter, and 42 feet deep, and it produces 16,000 gallons of clear water per 60 seconds. They have a pulley-raft where you can ride across the spring and take in the stunning views of the crystal clear water. The raft is covered so you can still check it out on rainy days. It is self operated since there is no one on duty to pull you across. It will take about 15 minutes to get to the center of the spring and back to the dock. The boat holds about 20-25 people at a time so keep that in mind for social distancing.
You can also pick up a souvenir penny and a couple of refills of water that taste like they came from a childhood water well. You can see to the bottom in the clear water where there are lots of fish and trees below the surface. Another cool feature is the fact that the spring feeds the glass lake so the water bubbles and churns as you gaze down upon it. It is such a peaceful and tranquil setting that you will not soon forget. It’s even more amazing when the fall colors are out due to the gorgeous reflection of the water.
It is recommended you plan to spend a good hour there, and possibly two hours during holidays. The lines tend to be shortest early in the morning or later in the evenings.
One of the most asked questions is can you fish or swim and the sad answer is “no”, you can’t do either, The water stays 40 degrees year round and interestingly enough, doesn’t ever freeze over. Learn more about Great Lakes Tours and Attractions and cruising Michigan with Great Lakes Cruises.
