Navy PierCHIGACO, ILLINOIS
When cruising with Great Lakes Cruises you will be fortunate enough to board the ship at the historic Navy Pier. One of Chicago's most popular destinations, unlike the larger cruise ships, smaller ships are able to maneuver their way in and out of the inlet and dock at the Navy Pier. |
One of the most visited places in the world, the Navy Pier welcomes millions of visitors each year, with a record breaking 9.3 million in 2016. The Navy Pier was initially designed for recreational and shipping purposes. It’s an architectural gem of engineering wonder and it’s positioned almost a mile into Lake Michigan. The pier dates back more than 100 years and is known as “The People’s Pier”. Time has seen the pier morph into a premier entertainment and exposition center of contemporary art and exhibits and is free to all. Much of what you see is permanently fixed, while others are temporary exhibits that showcase many talented artists to millions of people.
The Navy Pier offers several experiences from shopping, dining, rides & games, art, and entertainment. One of the most popular and iconic rides is the Centennial Wheel. You’ll be taken to a height of nearly 200 feet on the Centennial Wheel where you can see amazing 360 degree views of Chicago and Lake Michigan. The gondola’s include plush seating and glass bottoms so you can see even more of the area.
The pier is also home to the Chicago Children’s Museum and Gift Shop. It’s a great place to let the children play and take home a souvenir toy.
The pier is also home to the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre company, Miller Lite Beer Garden, The Crystal Gardens, and the Fifth Third Bank Family Pavilion where you can dine and shop until you drop.
Make sure you check out TV Land’s life sized statue of Bob Newhart that was unveiled on July 27, 2004. Another great photo op is the Captain on the Helm statue. This bronze statue was a gift from the Chicago Lodge of Shipmasters in the year 2000. It commemorates many legendary captains with a plaque that says “To those courageous mariners who guided their ships through perilous waters, carrying cargo and people. Their contributions have been so much a part of our history. May they never be forgotten.” There truly is so much to see at the Navy Pier for everyone so make sure you take a trip to the pier for a day of fun. Learn more about the cruises that visit Chicago.
