This stunning place of worship was designated a minor basilica in 1982 by Pope John Paul II, and in 1989 it was named a national historic site of Canada. |
Just the colorful stained glass windows are a tribute to the notoriety of this work of art. The altarpiece has a theme which was created around the sacrament that honors the sacrifice of Christ. In the center, is the Crucifixion of the altarpiece which represents Christ death on the cross. The Virgin and Saint John are standing on the sides of the cross as Saint Mary Magdalene kneels at Christ feet.
There are 4 scenes from the Old Testament around the Crucifixion. The sacrifice of Isaac by his father Abraham, the offering of wine and bread by Melchizedek, the high priest Aaron sacrificing the lamb, and Moses praying at the Ark of the Covenant.
One of the primary pieces of the altarpiece is the coronation of Mary who was crowned by the Messiah Christ showing victory over death. There is also a visual composition of angels and stars with a with a bright blue background which indicates the way to celestial happiness.
The beautiful big Casavant organ is something to see as well. With 92 stops arranged on four keyboards with a pedal board. The organ was originally built in1891 and has since undergone some restorations and upgrades when the composition was increased to 7,000 pipes. The largest pipe is 32 feet with the smallest pip at 1/4 of an inch.
The basilica also has the beautiful glass Chapel of the Holy Sacrament. The chapel allows it’s faithful congregation to pray in a peaceful setting while adoring the Blessed Sacrament which is preserved in the tabernacle of the alter.
