Pictured Rocks National SeashoreMUNISING, MICHIGAN
When cruising the Great Lakes, Pictured Rocks is an amazing site to see when cruising to or from Michigan. With 75,000 acres and 42 glorious miles of Lake Superior coastline, Pictured Rocks is one of the most stunning places you can visit in the area. Its name Pictured Rocks, comes from the beautiful sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, narrow hidden trails, and wooded river valley area. The cliffs are 300 feet of beautiful dunes. The Au Sable Light Station is located nearby so you’ll definitely want to see that. |
White Birch Trail is located behind Pictured Rocks biggest campground. It’s a fantastic place to hike since there is not as much traffic there, and you’ll find one of the best blueberry patches located there.

- The park has an abundance of waterfalls. Miners Falls is the biggest fall in the area and it was formed by the largest river in the park. Many of the other falls depend on rain to keep the water flowing, but Miners Falls is the most reliable. There are 2 different viewing areas for the falls, an upper and a lower and both are equally beautiful. While you are there, make sure you listen for the sweet sound of the wind as it blows up the canyon.
- The waves of Lake Superior have carved up the coast at Pictured Rocks so you will find inlets, caves and arches to explore. Some of the cliffs in the area are 100 feet and in the summertime, you will often see people diving into the clear deep water below.
- If hiking is your thing, try a trek through the Beaver Basin Wilderness. It’s a 5 mile circle that will give your legs a workout through the hilly terrain. Once you reach the upper entry area, you will see an absolutely amazing view before your eyes. Stay on the trail until you see Little Beaver Lake, then Big Beaver Lake nestled amongst big tall pines. The mouth of Beaver Creek will then open up to Lake Superior and that’s where the money spot is! You’ll see beautiful blue water in one direction, and gorgeous cliffs rising up high in the other direction.
- Another fantastic view you won’t want to miss is to hike from Miners Castle to Miners Beach. The stunning rock formations along the coast will lead you through a maple, hemlock forest into Miners River and ending at the edge of Miners Beach. Some people will often miss the incredible view in between Miners Beach and Miners Castle because they pull up by car and check each one out, not realizing there is a stellar view to be seen in between.
- Another fantastic place to explore is Log Slide Lookout located on the parks eastern shores. This is a postcard worthy sight to see. You will also want to see the lone white pines that grow atop Chapel Rock which hold a commemorative spot on the 2018 official U.S. quarter.
- Another interesting phenomena is the Underwater Sand Dunes off Sand Point. The sandstone and dunes above the water actually continue far beneath it. They actually extend hundreds of feet high and even though sand as a whole is quite fragile, it retains its formation just like above the water when its moved by the wind.
- Last but not least, you’ll want to check out Mosquito Beach and not for the reasons you think. There is a nice breeze that blows in from the lake so mosquitos aren’t as likely to carry you off there. There is hiking in this area as well as kayaking during the summer months.
