What a shame it would be to visit Provincetown, MA and not see the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum. The monument was founded in 1892 by the Cape Code Pilgrim Memorial Association. It’s sole purpose is to commemorate the first landing in the New World in Provincetown by the Maylflower Pilgrims’ in 1620. The Pilgrims spent 5 weeks exploring the tip of Cape Cod prior to sailing onward to Plymouth. The Mayflower Compact which established the rule of law for the new land was also drawn up and signed here.
The cornerstone was laid in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt. The 252 foot tower was dedicated in 1910 by President William Howard Taft. Also in 1910, the first museum opened at the base of the monument for the sole purpose of educating the public about Provincetown’s role in Pilgrim and American history.
The Provincetown Museum is a little old and new mixed together in a delightful display. The permanent exhibits have the old fashioned history museum charm. Their exhibits highlight the arrival of the Mayflower Pilgrims, the building of the monument, and the rich maritime history of the town.
Another cool thing to see is the recreation of a 19th century sea captain’s parlor at home and his quarters at sea. Included in the exhibits is a reenactment of a diorama of the Mayflower Compact being signed aboard the Mayflower in Provincetown Harbor. Additionally, there is a scale model of the Provincetown Players, the first theatre in Provincetown.
Millions of visitors as well as locals have admired and ascended the 252 foot granite Pilgrim Monument for more than 100 years.
The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum are Provincetown’s oldest non-profit educational, tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization. The Association’s mission is to preserve the collection and research of archival materials on all aspects relating to the town’s history. Including the Wampanoag and other indigenous peoples who had a great impact on the region.
