Point-a-la-Renommee Lighthouse
GASPE, QUEBEC
When cruising the Great Lakes, going to see the Point-a-la-Renommee Lighthouse is something you should not miss when cruising Gaspe, Quebec. Views that are post card worthy are a must see when cruising the Great Lakes region. One in particular that stands out is Point-a-la-Renommee, a historic lighthouse on Fame Point in Gaspe, QC. |
The historic site was redeveloped into a recreational tourism destination that thousands of visitors enjoy every year. Words cannot adequately describe the beauty found here at the point. The site has two exhibits “Marconi, history of communications and radio”, and “The space of a life at Point-a-la-Renommee”. Their guide-interpreters will introduce you to the exhilarating history that lies within.
You will learn the stories of the lighthouse keepers and their families, the fishermen that lived off the isolated shores nearby, and the maritime radio telegraph operators who help complete the picture of this fascinating place. At the point, you can enjoy the exhibits, check out the craft shop where artisans from the region sell their works, or burn some energy on one of their hiking trails as you enjoy the splendor of the Gaspe landscapes.
Very near Pointe-a-la-Renommee, the first radio telegraph signals from North America were transmitted and used in the protection of human life at sea. Because of its incredible radio range, one of the world’s most well known call signs “Victor Charlie Golf” (VCG) was introduced here. The site was originally established in 1904 only to be repatriated a century later as one of Canada’s top tourism attractions. The site was also used during two world wars as a strategic communications center.
The point’s name origin comes from a couple of different hypotheses. The first occurred in 1736 due to the sinking of the La Renommee vessel from La Rochelle that ran aground in the waters off Anticosti Island. The second comes from a story about some castaways who made it to the point only to learn the point was inaccessible by land at that time. Unfortunately, they ended up suffering from hunger upon their arrival instead. The locals called it “hunger point” which translates in English to “Fame Point”.
