Second City Comedy ClubCHICAGO, ILLINOIS
Chicago’s Second City has been a pillar for comedy for more than 60 years. They initially started out as a small comedy cabaret in 1959 in Chicago. On opening night, the carpet was still being installed when they opened their doors to the audience. They grew quickly and a year later began to expand. |
When your cruise takes you to Chicago you will have to to take in a show at Second City. They now have theaters and training centers in Chicago, Toronto, and Hollywood. By 1961, Joan Rivers had made her debut there. Paul Sills, one of the founding fathers believed firmly that for improv to deliver the best in comedy, spontaneity was a must. In 1962, The Second City ventured across the water to the UK and swapped stages with London’s The Establishment. The company ventured north to Toronto in 1963 and within a decade had opened a location there. They welcomed their first African American actor in 1966 named Bob Curry. With so much success, The Second City decided it was time to take the show on the road so in 1967 they started a touring company.
The 1970’s welcomed in a new generation of amazing comedians. Belushi, Radner, Candy, Aykroyd, O’Hara, Short and Murray were just a few of those voices.
By the 1980’s, The Second City was a nationally known comedy institution. The Blues’s Brothers quickly formed in the 1980’s and they introduced SCTV which was a 90 minute late night show after Johnny Carson.
By 1992, the infamous Robin Williams made a legendary guest appearance at The Second City at their West Coast location. The 2000’s expanded to the high seas with shows on Norwegian Cruise Line.
Subsequent performers over the years included appearances from Barack Obama and Rod Blagojevich. In 2010 the company suffered an extra alarm fire and was almost destroyed but that didn’t stop them as they rebuilt and continued in their success. The Second City is still going strong today so when you’re in Chicago, be sure to take in a show or two. Learn more about the different cruises that visit Chicago.
