Sleeping Bear Dunes

- One of the most picturesque adventures you can take while in Michigan, is the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This 71,187 acre park has an elevation of 450 feet and hugs the northeast shore of Lake Michigan. The Heritage Trail winds through the beautiful forests and sweeps alongside the 19th century farmsteads of the Port Oneida area.
- Probably the best place to start your visit is at the Phillip a. Hart Visitor Center located in Empire, MI. The local rangers can point you in the right direction plus you can pick up a map of the area.
- There are places you can paddle the waters, or take a ranger led expedition. Other activities offered in the park are hiking and climbing dunes. The 7 mile scenic drive down Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is one of the more popular ones. The Glen Haven and Maritime Museum are both located near by. You can dip your toes in Look Lake or squish them in a sand dune.
- The park is full of rich Native American history and cultures.
- The area is known for its logging, shipping, and agriculture in the region.
- There is so much of nature to see here at the park like the fine examples of landforms created by glaciers, hardwood and conifer forest, and beautiful streams and lakes.
- There are several species of birds in the area you can enjoying spotting as well.
- There is also a 1871 lighthouse, 3 former Coast Guard Stations as well as the historic farm district to see.
- Swimming is allowed at one of the beaches so if you plan to swim, check with the ranger on duty at the visitor center for that location.
