The Glensheen MansionDULUTH, MINNESOTA
On the shore of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota, stands the glorious 39-room Glensheen mansion. As the most attended house musuem in the Midwest, you will certainly understand why once you visit. The estate was built for the wealthy family of Chester and Clara Congdon who had seven children. Chester Congdon made his fortune through iron mining, as well as an accomplished attorney for the Oliver Mining Company. This would eventually become a part of what is known as U.S. Steel. |
The 27,000 square foot mansion with its remarkable 20th-century craftsmanship, was completed in 1909. Using many local craftsmen, Glensheen’s architect Clarence H. Johnston is considered one of the most respected and influential architects in Minnesota’s history, which is evident throughout the mansion. The interior of the mansion features beautiful furnishings from all over the globe including a red Numidian marble fireplace stone from Algeria, carved Circassian walnut panels from Russia, and Italian tapestry wall coverings throughout. Back then, the estate cost the Congdons $854,000 to build, which in todays market would be about $22 million.
The 12-acre estate features amazing views of Lake Superior, along with a formal garden, an elaborate vegetable garden, and quaint stone bridges. Tischer Creek and Bent Brook both flow around the sides of the mansion, which in turn is surrounded by beautiful evergreens and native flowers.
Glensheen is currently owned and operated by the University of Minnesota. The mansion has recently completed over $6 million in restoration. Visitors can enjoy frequent new events and seasonal tour offerings so stay tuned to their website for more upcoming details. Tours of the mansion and grounds are self-guided with the latest developed APP which includes an audio tour.
