Holland, MI is home to the Tulip Time Festival each May 1st-8th. They are celebrating their 92nd year in 2021. The festival has been going on since 1929. The citizens gather each year to plant the tulips and there are hundreds of thousands that bloom every year. Countless tulip lovers attend the Tulip Time Festival each year. It’s not just about the tulips, they host national entertainment acts, activities and events for every age, breathtaking sights off the shore of Lake Michigan, and they have some of the largest parades in Michigan. |
The festival draws more than 500,000 people each year.and takes place over 9 days in May. With over six million tulips blooming throughout the city the Tulip Time Festival is more than just flowers. There are Klompen dancers in authentic garb performing in the streets. There are parades, art exhibits, a 10K run, fireworks, shows, and every kind of food wagon you can think of.In 1929, the City of Holland planted their 1st crop of 100,000 tulips.
The tulips are planted each year in the fall before they go dormant in the winter, only to shoot from the ground and blossom in the Spring. As the years have gone by and the festival has grown, the parades has only increased with things like pageantry, costumes, parades, the ever so popular Dutch Dancers who dance for periods of 15 minutes at a time. The festival has been the recipient of numerous awards over the past years like the American Bus Association, National Tour Association, West Michigan Festivals & Events Association, and the Circle Michigan.
There are hundreds of thousands of tulips to enjoy. The Tulip Time Festival has been touted as the Nations Best Flower Festival, and the Best Small Town Festival, and they once won the Tulip Festival of the Year!
