Day 2 | Scenic Sailing: St. Lawrence Seaway Locks
Making its way out of The Great Lakes, the Viking Octantis travels into the St. Lawrence Seaway system, which stretches all the way from Lake Ontario to the Atlantic Ocean. It encompasses a number of engineering marvels, including 15 locks and five canals, including the Welland Canal. Not limited to manmade features, the St. Lawrence Seaway is lined with natural scenery, from sprawling woodlands to Quebec's Laurentian Mountains.

Day 3 | Trois-Rivières, Quebec
Visit one of Quebec's oldest cities, Trois-Rivières. An essential cultural destination found at the confluence of the Saint-Maurice and Saint Lawrence, Trois-Rivières was the second city to be permanently settled in the early French territory of New France, officially established 1634. It began as a small fur trading settlement, working with the First Nations and the French to facilitate one of North America's earliest industries. Today, the city is a gateway to La Mauricie National Park and a number of other outdoors activities.
On this day, choose between four outstanding shore excursions that explore the beautiful nature surrounding Trois-Rivières, from La Mauricie National Park to Lake Saint Pierre, a nearby UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

LAKE SAINT PIERRE BY BOAT

MARSH AND WETLANDS OF THIS UNESCO BIOSPHERE RESERVE Explore the channels and bays of Lake Saint Pierre, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, during an enchanting boat ride. Lake Saint Pierre’s marshes and wetlands are annually frequented by thousands of waterfowl. It is also a popular destination for hikers, kayakers and fishermen. Meet your naturalist guide, then receive a short safety briefing before boarding your vessel and heading out onto the lake. Your guide will offer insight into this complex ecosystem and point out the different flora and fauna that thrive here. Learn about the 29 species of birds, 90 species of fish and 27 rare plants that have been identified in this reserve. Pass through the Wildlife Sanctuary of Great Island, home to the world’s largest nesting ground for herons, and keep watch for muskrats that patrol the edges of the water. ROLE OF WOODLAND INGREDIENTS IN THE CUISINE OF QUEBEC Journey deep into the forest to discover a woodland bounty and the unique cuisine of Northern Quebec. Board your rabaska, a large canoe made from tree bark that was used by the Algonquin tribe and colonial-era fur traders to carry goods long distances along North American waterways. As you and your fellow guests paddle, your naturalist guide will share his knowledge of the local flora and fauna. At the picnic site, park your rabaska, then embark on a scenic forest hike. FOREST SOJOURN THROUGH THE ANCIENT GEOLOGIC HEART OF NORTH AMERICA Discover the natural and cultural treasures of Canada during a hike through La Mauricie National Park. Embark on a scenic drive to the park, 207 square miles of protected land that is home to 150 different lakes and ponds, plus a variety of flora and fauna. It also sits on the southern edge of the Canadian Shield, North America’s ancient geological heart. Set off down a path that will take you along a cascading stream lined with conifers before crossing over marshland and continuing through a maple grove. Breathe in the fresh air, relax and admire the striking views of the forest and nearby Laurentian Mountains as you hike. You will occasionally stop as your naturalist guide will point out interesting geological features and regale you with the history of the region. Day 4 | Quebec City, Quebec
Quebec's first and most historic city, Quebec City is a cultural cornerstone. It's Old Town is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its fortified walls and delightful French-inspired buildings that transport you back hundreds of years. At the center of Old Town, find the Château Frontenac -- which many believe to be the world's most photographed hotel. Quebec City's walls were built during the 1600s, making it an important symbol of New France's early military might.
Here, you'll be treated to one of four included excursions or a premium one, each of which invites you outdoors to see the beauty that brings so many to Quebec City.

MONASTERY VISIT AND MEDICINAL HERB WORKSHOP Discover the holistic health practices of the Augustinian sisters during a visit to their historic monastery. Granted a charter by the French king Louis XIII during the early 17th century, the order’s nuns traveled to New France and established North America’s first hospital north of Mexico, dedicating themselves to healing the bodies and souls of the sick. Embark on a short drive by motor coach through the city’s Old Port to the monastery; artfully restored, today it functions as a nonprofit wellness hotel as well as an archive for the sisters’ generations of knowledge. Enjoy a guided tour of this tranquil environment, learning about its storied history and holistic heritage, before joining an interactive workshop on medicinal herbs and teas. ASCEND THE MOUNTAIN FOR SWEEPING VIEWS OF THE CANADIAN COUNTRYSIDE Revel in the beauty of the Canadian wilderness during a hike to the summit of Mont-Sainte-Anne. Located just 30 minutes from Quebec City, this mountain resort is a popular year-round destination for locals and visitors alike. After a scenic drive to the trailhead, follow your guide up Le Sentier des Pionniers (Pioneers’ Trail) for a steep 2½-mile trek up the mountainside. Amble through the forest, which will occasionally open to offer views of the slopes below. Upon arrival at the summit, admire the sweeping 360° views of the quaint villages that dot the surrounding countryside, the winding ways of the St. Lawrence River and far-off bustle of Quebec City in the distance. Enjoy free time to explore on your own. You may choose to get a snack (at your own expense) before boarding the gondola and journeying down the mountain. DISCOVER THE “GARDEN OF QUEBEC” FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE Kayak the waters of one of the first areas of Quebec settled by Europeans, the bucolic island of Île d’Orléans. Along the way, discover the island from a different perspective while learning about its history. Located a short distance from downtown Quebec City, Île d’Orleans offers a rich blend of rural tradition and European charm; it is also considered the birthplace of Francophones in North America and is called the “Garden of Quebec.” Meet your naturalist guide, then receive a short safety briefing and demonstration of how to use your kayak before leisurely paddling out into the St. Lawrence River. Pass jagged coves and admire the rolling hills of the island’s interior as you travel along the coast. You will have opportunities to stop for photographs and rest. GUIDED HIKE AND FREE TIME TO EXPLORE A NATURE REFUGE Explore the contrasting landscapes that form the Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Area during a hiking excursion. Created to protect the marshes that serve as the primary habitat for the greater snow goose during migration periods, this refuge is a mix of river shoreline, expansive tidal marshes, lowlands and mountains. It is home to more than 180 bird species, 30 mammal species and 700 plant varieties. Embark on a scenic drive by motor coach through the countryside to the park, where you will follow your naturalist guide on a hike. Along the way, stop to admire the striking views and learn about the local flora and fauna. At the end of your hike, you will have free time to explore Cap Tourmente on your own, followed by a delicious picnic lunch. Day 5 | Scenic Sailing: St. Lawrence River
Enjoy a day of scenic sailing after the previous day's excitement. The St. Lawrence River is a stunning waterway, lined with nature, cultural destinations, and engineering marvels. You'll pass by Quebec City and nearby Île d’Orléans, Montreal, and Île d’Anticosti. Not only will you have access to incredible sights, but the entire Viking Octantis as well. With lounges, dining rooms, lectures, and a spa and science lab, the ship has is sure to entertain.

Day 6 | Cap-aux-Meules, Quebec
Located on an archipelago in the midst of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Cap-aux-Meules is an essential harbor for Canada's fishing industry. A small, quiet place, it earns its name, which translates to Grindstone in English, from a large sandstone rock -- Grindstone Rock -- that juts out of the island. The area was originally settled by the Mi'kmaq tribe, who hunted walrus off the Magdalen Islands. Cap-aux-Meules functions as a gateway to all kinds of beauty, from incredible natural scenes to historic locations.

PADDLE AMID A SCENIC SETTING OF RED CLIFFS AND SEA CAVES Explore the majestic coastal landscape of the Magdalen Islands during a sea kayak excursion. The archipelago in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence is a renowned destination for kayaking, its scenic setting famous for its cliffs and sea caves. Board either a single or tandem kayak, then follow your naturalist guide along the coast. Admire the rugged coastline as you paddle to the striking red sandstone cliffs in Gros-Cap and Belle Anse; depending on the weather and water conditions, you may have the opportunity to pass under the arches and enter the sea caves, sculpted into the island’s rock face by the gulf’s waters. Keep watch for local wildlife as your guide provides insight into the island’s ecosystem. CRUISE A COASTLINE IN SEARCH OF PINNIPEDS Discover the lives of the seals of the Magdalen Islands during a zodiac ride through their natural environment. Large populations of gray and harbor seals frolic in the temperate waters along the islands’ shores and near rocky islets, and spend their days warming themselves on the sandbanks. Meet your naturalist guide and receive a short safety briefing, then board your zodiac to depart for the island’s eastern end. Enjoy the fresh air as you cruise to your destinations. You will have an opportunity to observe the seals at Île Brion at the end of the Grande Échouerie beach in Grosse-Île, at Corps-Mort Rock and on the beach at Dune-du-Sud. Watch as the seals socialize and swim; your guide will offer insight into the seals’ lives, their environment and the fragile ecosystem they inhabit. LEISURELY RIDE THROUGH A SCENIC COUNTRYSIDE AND BEACHES Saddle up for a horseback ride across the picturesque landscapes around Cap-aux-Meules. After a scenic drive to a horse farm, you will meet your equine companion that will be chosen for you based on your height, weight and riding experience. Brush and saddle your ride before mounting, then spend time learning to communicate and be comfortable with each other. Your guides will then lead you out into the beautiful and varied landscapes that make up the island. Admire the idyllic scenery as you head out over the fields. Ride across a beach between towering dunes, then splash through the waves along the shore, your sure-footed horse keeping you dry. HAVRE-AUX-MAISONS, GRANDE-ENTRÉE AND LOCAL ARTISAN VISITS Immerse yourself in life on the Magdalen Islands during visits to several villages and local artisans. Travel to the island of Havre-aux-Maisons, where you will visit both a traditional smokehouse and a wine producer to sample locally produced smoked meats and wine. Pass through the island’s namesake village, a charming collection of colorful houses perched atop red sandstone cliffs, and stop at Dune-du-Sud. Enjoy free time to explore the underground caves that dot the area. For lunch, enjoy a delicious menu of Acadian fare in a relaxed atmosphere at a local restaurant. Then, discover the island’s fishing heritage during free time at the village of Grande-Entrée’s harbor, the largest in the archipelago. Day 7 | Explore Cape Breton Island
When you arrive on the shore of Cape Breton Island, you'll see why it's a favorite among voyagers. Here you'll find Louisbourg, best known for its eponymous 18th century fortress. Designated a National Historic Site, Louisbourg Fortress is a perfectly restored example of military might, and you'll have the chance to visit it as it stands guard over the town. Numerous exhibits and costumed portrayals of 1700s life in Louisbourg fill the town, making for an experience you'll never forget. Just outside of town, you'll find miles of hiking paths that trail from farmland to forest, and coves popular with fisherman and boaters.

Day 8 | Explore Coastal Nova Scotia
Arrive in the town of Lunenburg in Coastal Nova Scotia for a snapshot of colonial North American history. When first disembarking the ship, you'll find that the town is brimming with architecture. Standout buildings like the colonial-styled Lunenburg Academy, the pink Wedding Cake House, and St. John's Anglican Church are eye-catching examples of what the town has to offer. Lunenburg was one of the first attempts to settle Protestants in Nova Scotia by the British Empire, and the first permanent European settlement north of Florida. Because of this and its delightful buildings this town is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic Site.

Days 9 | Sail the Atlantic Ocean
Set sail on the Atlantic Ocean, with its lengthy Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This mountain range was formed by the separation of tectonic plates along the ocean floor, and extends approximately 10,000 miles. During your day, take advantage of the Octantis' host of features, or attend a film in the The Aula, an innovative indoor-outdoor panoramic venue with 270° views via moving floor-to-ceiling windows. Lectures will also be available on board regarding North America's ecology, ensuring something for everyone.

Day 10 | New York City, New York
Lovingly referred to as The Big Apple, New York City is the United States' biggest city by population. The city is known for its incredible culture, where it feels like anything is possible. Countless musicians, artists, and other talents call the city home, performing shows at Carnegie Hall or the Guggenheim Museum. You'll find awe-inspiring, historic architecture at the Empire State Building and Grand Central Station. Or, for thespian cruisers, a visit to Broadway, with its many plays, is a must.

Founded in 1869, the museum showcases scientific collections and exhibits that highlight the beauty and abundance of life on earth. Explore New York’s Dutchess County, the ecology of North America’s forests or the marine life and creatures of the ocean’s ecosystems. Learn about the effect of human life on climate change or the conservation projects led by the museum, in a bid to educate visitors on the role that humans can play in protecting our planet. OBSERVE AN ARRAY OF NEW YORK CITY’S WILDLIFE Set out in search of birdlife in New York’s Central Park and discover the wealth of wildlife in the Big Apple. Bird-watching requires patience, but with a few hints and tips from your knowledgeable guide, you will be able to relax your gaze and train your eyes to search the shrubs and trees for signs of birdlife. There are four zones in Central Park that provide the perfect opportunity for birdwatching; the North Wood covers 40 acres of lush woodland; the Ramble provides a leafy canopy with birdfeeders to attract wildlife; the Hallet Nature Sanctuary; and the Pond, where great egrets and red-tailed hawks can be frequently spotted. Your guide will assist you in getting the most out of your visit, providing advice on the best use of your binoculars and how to identify the various species. For your twelfth day of sailing, visit the city of Norfolk, Virginia. Since the colonial era, the destination has been an essential piece of maritime might. Norfolk has been the setting of multiple naval battles, including the 1776 Burning of Norfolk, when the British Royal Navy bombarded and set the city on fire, and the Battle of Hampton Roads, where the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia, the first battle between two ironclad ships, fought until stalemate. Arrive in charming Charleston, South Carolina: a lovable, beach-lined city renowned for its history, oceanside restaurants and bars, and its leisurely, classic Southern pace of life. First established in 1670, the city went on to become the place where the US Civil War began. Visit the exact spot where it started with a tour of Fort Sumter, delivered by National Park Rangers. Charleston is also notable for its unique, well-preserved historic style. You'll see it nearly everywhere you go, from cobblestone streets to colonial-era homes to magnificent courtyards.
