Day 6 | Cap aux Meules, Quebec

Translating to Grindstone in English, the village had been the site of several shipwrecks until a lighthouse was installed many years ago. In town, find an urban society with lots of great restaurants and shopping. Or, step just outside of town to explore all the wonderful sites of the Magdalen Islands Archipelago.
Day 6 Excursions:
A Taste of Iles De La Madeleine ($149)
Time: 3.5 Hours
Activity Level: Moderate Essentials Collection | Sightseeing | Refreshments Start your tour with a visit to the Pied-de-Vent Cheese Factory Come for a typically Madelinot taste experience! Taste and learn why Pied-de-Vent cheeses are so popular. Meet the dedicated artisans and learn about a typical day in the life of a cheese maker. Test your knowledge of cheese and see both vintage and modern cheese making tools. Above all, treat yourself by tasting these Island cheeses. A short drive will take you along Chemin Pointe-Basse, a road peppered with many examples of traditional local architecture: simple houses and barns painted in a variety of bright colors. The Acadian and French origins of many of the Islanders, as well as some New England influences are reflected in the architecture of their homes. Several details are typical of the traditional home: the small enclosed porch, corbel, veranda, and painted or stained cedar shingles. Arrive at Fumoir d’Antan a typical smokehouse, which brings to life this last vestige of what was once a very important industry. This smokehouse has been used for three generations to smoke herring, mackerel, salmon and scallops. You will be able to see the room that was used to smoke herring in the past and today it is transformed into a museum exhibit. You will get to taste mackerel, scallops, herring and salmon. The north coast of the island boasts spectacular steep, jagged cliffs. Cap Hérissé offers one of the most striking examples of cliffs sculpted by the sea. Every year the Islands lose an average of 2 feet of shore, which is very worrying for the locals. Finally visit and taste at brewery À l'abri de la Tempête which believes in the maximum use of local raw materials in the creation of its beers. They start by using locally malted barley, then move on to harvesting and using fresh flowers, marine algae and herbs. They use all these locally grown ingredients to brew full-flavored, distinctive beers. Guided tours, a boutique and a beer pub are on the premises. Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes and weather appropriate clothing. Caves & Cliffs By Boat ($139)
Time: 1.75 Hours
Activity Level: Moderate Boating | Essentials Collection | Sightseeing | Wildlife Riding on a boat along the coastline is the ideal way to admire the Islands' fascinating red cliffs sculpted by the sea. The guide will explain the erosion of the coast and also the geological formation and will share a bit of history and, when possible, point out various species of birds. You will also learn about lobster fishing and assist in the raising of a lobster trap. The guide will explain how the lobsters get in the trap, what type of bait that they are using to catch lobsters, the difference between male or female, the size of lobster which is allowed to be caught, etc. Also he will explain all about regulations regarding licensing of lobster fishing which is an industry that is the most important on the Islands and started in 1875. The guide will also talk about the Entry Islands which are not connected with the archipelago but have a population of 80 people who live there and you will learn about Island life in general. Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes and weather appropriate clothing. Life jackets will be provided. Island Highlights ($139)
Time: 3 Hours
Activity Level: Moderate Sightseeing Depart from the pier for a short drive to La Vernière wooden church, first built in 1876 and now classified as a historical monument. It is the second largest wooden church in North America and was struck several times by lightning: first in 1900, then in 1945, 1947 and 1980. The wood used in its construction was retrieved from shipwrecks and had to be blessed before the building could be rebuilt. It is an important element of the Madelinot heritage. Your next stop will be for a snack at “le Flâneur” art gallery. Relax by the sea and enjoy a break with a scone, homemade jam and coffee or chose from a selection of over 50 different teas. After you will visit the gallery and meet the artist and discover the watercolor paintings and "Arthure" dolls and specimens on display. The artist has expressed on large canvasses the many emotions typical of her island lifestyle, and, in so doing, she has created a summary of her 40-year career. Appreciate Arthure's work, and you will appreciate what defines us and draws us together. For those who want to there will be an opportunity to walk across the street and have access to l’Étang-du-Nord fishing harbor with its magnificent sculpture and park. Then head to the north coast of the island, indented by spectacularly steep and jagged cliffs at Cap Hérissé lighthouse which offers one of the most striking examples of cliffs sculptured by the sea. Every year the Island is losing an average of 2 feet of shore, something the Madelinots worry about. Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes and weather appropriate clothing. |

All Is Made in Lunenburg ($249)
Time: 4 Hours
Activity Level: Easy-Moderate Essentials Collection | Sightseeing | UNESCO | Walking | Wine See why people flock to Lunenburg for the sights and the unique Maritime tastes! Hop aboard your bus and travel to Lunenburg County Winery, founded in 1993. It is located on the beautiful South Shore of Nova Scotia. Tour the vineyard and enjoy a tasting of the winery’s famous, award winning 100% Nova Scotia grown fruit wines or a picnic with a remarkable view. Once you’ve had your fill of blueberries and fruit wines, you’ll board the bus for a short trip to Saltbox Brewery. The Saltbox house is identified by its sloping gable roof that gives it the asymmetrical shape of a lidded wooden box used to store salt during Loyalist times. In those days, most brewing and drinking was done in the home. Some say the lower roof line jutting out from the main part of the house was an addition to allow owners to incorporate a small brew room onto their living quarters. Saltbox Brewery is known for brewing small batches of quality beer. It is a deeply rooted expression of the heritage and craftsmanship found in Nova Scotia. The resurgence of craft brewing marks a renaissance of the kind of local brewing that took place before the Industrial Revolution – when making beer was a standard household chore as integral as baking bread. You will tour the local brewery and learn about the artistry required to create fresh, full-flavored beer for the local community and surrounding areas. Please note: Wear sturdy walking shoes and a warm sweater and bring your camera. Bay to Bay Biking Tour ($165)

As the second oldest church of English origin in Canada, as well as a Canadian National Historic Site, St. John’s is recognized as one of North America’s best examples of Carpenter Gothic architecture. It's not only the tallest mountain in Acadia but is the highest point along North America's eastern seaboard and from October to March it's the first spot in the U.S. to see the morning sun. It may be windy up at the top but a walk up to the summit rewards you with dramatic 360-degree views of Bar Harbor, Frenchman Bay, and the Cranberry Islands. Then it's on to another natural wonder: Thunder Hole. This small inlet is famous for the thunderous clap that occurs when seawater crashes into the tiny inlet and water is forced out. If you decide to take a photo, be prepared to get soaked, the waterspout can explode as high as 40 feet! On your way to the restaurant you'll travel through picturesque Seal Beach. Once at the restaurant you'll enjoy a buffet lunch that includes lobster (steak is available for those who do not prefer lobster), clam chowder, corn on the cob, potato salad, coleslaw, and your choice of blueberry dessert or cake. After lunch, another must see photo stop is on the itinerary before you return to your ship. In the heart of the Park is the Jordan Pond House with a beautiful view of the Penobscot Mountains and Bubbles Hill as you explore the grounds. Please note: Dress in layers and bring a hat and raincoat or umbrella. Haunted Walking Tour Of Bar Harbor ($29)
